Texas A&M University Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Chemistry Donald J. Darensbourg has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Dr. Darensbourg is among 120 new members and 30 foreign associates to be inducted.
"Established by an Act of Congress, signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, the NAS is charged with providing independent, objective advice to the nation on matters related to science and technology. Scientists are elected by their peers to membership in the NAS for outstanding contributions to research."
Darensbourg is a organometallic/inorganic chemist whom has made notable contributions in the fields of green chemistry, materials science, and polymerization. "His work has led to the synthesis of biodegradable polymers for use in medical devices, including surgical sutures, internal fixation devices for repair of fractures to small bones, drug-delivery devices and dental implants."
